We’ve had a very busy and highly productive summer preparing our iOS 17 update. There’s a lot to unpack. We have always been mindful about additions because we want to level up personality and utility (and not bloat). We think the changes naturally extend the experience and should be more proof that we are a genuinely fresh alternative.

Introducing Focus mode

• Focus! Our ambition has always been for timing to help you better organise your life. But our vision demands more: we want to be an active player in helping you get things done. And so we’re excited to share with you the launch version of our Focus module.

To begin with, you can activate it from two different spots:

1. Tap on the [Live] button for any task or event that’s currently active, either from Agenda or their fullscreen card. This defaults to a countdown timer for time remaining, but there are controls available to increase the length of the session, as well as to mark it as finished.

2. Any task that has been estimated will have a new [Play] button beside their estimate that enables you to start their focus session at any time via their fullscreen card.

   We’ve been highly intentional where we’ve taken our cues from in Focus’ design, and hope you find the experience to be smooth and feel natural. There are a few things to keep in mind:

   • If you [x] out of Focus for an item that’s not live, the session ends i.e. returning to Focus will reset the clock.
   • If, however, you stay on Focus, and leave the app, a Focus live activity becomes active and you’ll receive a notification too when time is up.
   • For you to max leverage Focus, get into the habit of estimating tasks.

   We will write in more detail about the experience soon to optimise your focus.

   The best news: this is just its MVP. We have so many cool things planned to extend Focus to turbo boost your productivity.

• Productivity software shouldn’t feel like office work. Calendars are your personal planner, and so they should reflect your personality. In this update, we’re taking another big step to enable self-expression: a new Color theme option. Picking this will use your accent color to make your calendar pop. We know we can do more though, and so expect more options and control to come in future updates.

• A brand new Month calendar widget. And — of course — it’s interactive. You can change dates and months, and tick tasks as complete. At the moment, it’s available in only the large widget size, but expect smaller sizes soon.

Improvements

• You can now long-press on the post-it icon storing pinned items, and choose to move it to a custom location. What this allows is for you to drag the post-it and drop it anywhere on the screen. By doing so, this makes the post-it universally accessible, i.e. it’s tappable from anywhere on your Calendar and Inbox (as opposed to the top of the Agenda view only).

As with every addition, we’ll regularly, meaningfully and naturally enhance their utility through incremental improvements. For example, a pinned items widget is on the way soon!

• Agenda widget is now interactive: you can tick tasks as complete. We plan to make it available in a large size too in a near future update.
• All entry UX now considers the theme set, and so there’s no dark-light contrast when you’re on the light theme.
• All sheets to customise visibility of items (entry, week, filters) refreshed so it’s more obvious what’s on/off and becomes easier to rearrange visible items.
• UI finesse & performance optimisations across the board… way too many to list individually! In short, the app should look and feel more snappy.
• Toast messages that slide down from the top will have more space between their text and phone’s notch.
• The actual alert set for an event will show above the number of alerts… and it will use better language too when it’s set for event time.
